Vacation 2011

Since this is the second year in a row, I think it can now be called a tradition to go "up north" for vacation. On Thursday, June 30th we loaded up the Escape with our luggage, a bassinet, a dog, and a car seat. We were wondering why we didn't get another vehicle! I was really nervous about traveling so far with a new baby but she did so so well. On the way to the Upper Peninsula we decided to go through Olivet so that Ben's grandmother (Grace) could meet Kathryn. Grace turned 100 today so it was very special that she got to meet her great-grandaughter.

We only spent one evening in Olivet and then headed to the UP. We got to spend a week at the cabin on Cable Lake. Ben and I enjoyed the relaxation (and fishing), Ben got to spend his 31st birthday with his family, Kathryn enjoyed spending the time with grandma and grandpa, and Molly enjoyed playing in the lake and playing with her buddy smokey.

Some highlights from the trip:
  • Kaydi met her great-grandma on Ben's side of the family
  • We saw a moose, it was huge.
  • I saw a young eagle that had not left its nest yet
  • Saw a dead porcupine. I have been wanting to see one of these ever since my first trip
  • Got to see two loons and their two young babies
  • The weather was perfect (80's during the day and low 60's at night)
  • I caught a blue gill that qualified for master angler (10 inches long!)
  • Kaydi has now been to 5 states
It was a wonderful week!

Vacation

Warning: this is an account of our vacation for us so it is probably going to be pretty boring :)

Back to the real world...

On Sunday evening (two Sunday's ago now, I am slacking on this post) we got back from a long vacation. It was absolutely wonderful. We left Wednesday night and drove half way (stayed in Effingham, IL). On Thursday morning (7/15/10) we drove to Olivett to eat dinner with Judd and Cindy (Ben's parents) and to drop off our dog. From there we headed to Diamond Lake which is around Barryton, Michigan. This is the Perry's cabin where "Cabin Weekend" is hosted every year. I think Ben has been going since sometime in high school. This was my fourth trip to the cabin and third official cabin weekend. It was a small group this time but tons of fun. The main event is the pig roast which is on Saturday night. However, the rest of the weekend is just spending time on the water, eating, drinking, and playing games.

On Sunday we got around and left the Perry's at around noonish. It is always really hard for Ben to leave so it was nice that there was something else to look forward to! We headed to the UP. I don't think I will ever get used to crossing the Mackinac Bridge, I think it is super beautiful and it is always exciting to get from the lower to the upper (for all of my Missouri friends, I remember when this terminology was greek to me). After we crossed, we ate lunch at Clyde's which is a drive in that Ben holds fond memories of; it is really good. We also had to pull out the computer and get online to update the fantasy baseball team for the week :). Next stop was for fudge, white fish, and pasties....UP staples.

After stopping the last time in St. Ignace, we headed west. It took a while to get to the Knaup's cabin on Cable Lake but the drive was really pretty. For a lot of it you drive right along lake Michigan. Cable Lake was so remote, it was off the highway about 9 miles on a gravel road that was really rough, there was no cell signal (which was really good for me). I was pleasantly surprised by how nice the water was temperature wise. I was expecting very cold but it was not bad. We spent our days relaxing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing. It was wonderful. One day while we were there we drove to the hunting cabin (not too far away), another day we drove to Bond Falls and hiked around the water falls and then went out to eat.

On the way home we took two days again. We drove through Green Bay and Milwaukee, two cities I had never been too. We also stopped for a while at Sheboygen which is a town on the lake, we walked Molly around the boardwalk and then ate at a good, local restaurant.

On the way home, we kept talking about how we can't wait to go back!

I have pictures to post but my computer is taking forever so I will add those later.
